Tower Talk February 2017
The Office of Alumnae and Alumni Relations has revamped the Class Notes web form, which allows alumnae and alumni to submit their exciting news, personal or professional, to be shared with classmates through a number of university communication pieces, including Tower Talk and Universitas.
With new, easy to use features, the Class Notes form allows you to upload photos, share your stories and accomplishments, and reconnect with Notre Dame and your classmates. It's easy, and allows you to share your wonderful life moments with the NDMU community!
To submit a Class Note, please visit our new and improved online form. We welcome submissions about professional accomplishments, inspiring acts of service, and personal milestones, including weddings, new babies, and more!

The First Impressions program kicked off the 2017 Spring semester with an Interview Workshop, organized and moderated by dedicated alumna, Sallie Mullen. Panelists, Tina Schmitt, Shelley Wyatt, and Chris Carpino led students through a two hour workshop, with helpful tips on successfully conducting oneself during an interview, role-playing scenarios of different types of interviews, and an in-depth Q&A session during which students asked the panelists their biggest questions about the interview process.
The workshop, a required portion of the First Impressions program, prepares students, not only for interviews for jobs and internships, but for the peak of the First Impressions program: practice interviews with alumnae. Every year, students from the First Impressions program are paired with alumnae with experience in the specific fields of interest for our students, and have the opportunity to have the resumes and interview skills evaluated by hiring professionals. Students agree every year that this is one of the most unique and beneficial experiences that they could ask for before entering the competitive job market.

Attention! The 2017 Calendar of Events for the Networking Committee is coming soon and will be filled with exciting opportunities to network and reconnect with fellow NDMU alumnae, paired with fun and intellectually stimulating activities. While dates for the 2017 are still TBD, the plans are in motion for the following:
- Planetarium Night in Knott (led by Dr. Brian Christy)
- Museum Tour and Tea at the BMA and Gertrude’s
- Pub and Paint Night
- NYC Bus Trip with Students

Notre Dame's 2017 Busta Lecture in Business welcomes former WNBA President and PGA Senior Vice President Donna Orender. She is the founder and CEO of Orender Unlimited and a distinguished trailblazer in women's athletics and business. Having earned all-star status as a player in the Women's Professional Basketball League, Orender served from 2005 to 2011 as president of the WNBA, and previously as Senior Vice President of the PGA Tour. She is also the founder and CEO of Generation W, a non-profit platform aimed at promoting the development of the world's next female leaders.
Alum Awarded Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship
Big honors for Notre Dame of Maryland University graduate Candace Wright ‘16. The biology alum has been awarded the prestigious Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship. The fellowship offers recent graduates and career changers in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math) a stipend of $30,000 to complete a specially designed, cutting-edge master’s degree program in exchange for a commitment to teach for three years in high-need secondary urban or rural schools.
While attending Notre Dame, Wright worked multiple semesters as an undergraduate teaching assistant and during her senior year, she participated in a science teaching apprenticeship in the Biology Department with Dr. Jennifer Kerr.
Alum Honored by Archdiocese
On the Feast of the Epiphany, Dianne Lyon '60 was one of a group of individuals honored with the Manifesting the Kingdom Award for service to the community for her work with her husband running a food bank in Southern Maryland, Warpide Food Bank.

First Reunion Committee Meeting of 2017 a Success
The 2017 Reunion Committee, comprised of 22 alumnae from the class of 1962-2012, held its first meeting in January to begin the planning process for Reunion 2017. This year’s Reunion Weekend will be filled with exciting new changes inspired by WOW Baltimore, including opportunities to hear from speakers, as well as live musicians, artists, and other fun activities. Of course, classic favorites will be returning to the Reunion schedule, including the annual Crab Feast, Flashback Friday, and Classes without Quizzes. Invitations will be sent later this spring to celebrants (those who graduated from a year ending in 2 or 7), with a complete list of events. The complete list of events will also be available on the university website later this spring.

Notre Dame Day
On February 7, the campus came together to celebrate Notre Dame Day! The day recognizes the accomplishments of our students and our rich history. In addition to student recognition, the Distinguished Staff Award was given to Mary Burch Harmon '93 who serves as the assistant director of NDMU's English Language Institute and Short Term Programs. The SSND Mission and Ministry Award was presented to Brian Berry, professor of Religious Studies and the Service-Learning Faculty Award went to Maria Mouratidis, professor and chair of the Psychology Department.
The event is open to everyone in our community. "Notre Dame Day is a celebration of our students’ academic accomplishments in various areas of study, and their athletic achievements," says Sister Eileen O’Dea, Vice President for Mission. “It is also a time to reflect and remember the past and history of our community.”
Renaissance Institute Gatherings
Members of the Renaissance Institute recently enjoyed a program of Winter activities organized by two members and their committee. The program featured 31 different activities, including visits to museums, churches, conservatories, lunches at restaurants and in home theme meals, and a High Tea.
Members had to sign up for the events and it was such a success, a wait-list had to be created.
Sister Kathleen Feeley, who attended some of the events said, “It’s evident to me that this member-initiated program fulfills the mission of RI—intellectual joy and social interaction—with a unique flair.”
The goal of the Renaissance Institute program is to develop both the intellectual and the social elements of life. Many RI members even keep in touch throughout the year.
